What precaution to take after you have had a tooth extracted?
After an extraction, your dentist will send you home for recovery and it will take few days to recover.
Following are the post op instruction one should follow to avoid infection and dry socket: –

  • Take pain killers as prescribed
  • Bite firmly but gently on gauze pad placed by your dentist, this will reduce bleeding and allow a clot to form in socket which will accelerate healing.
  • Leave gauze pad for one hour
  • Apply ice pack on outside the affected area immediately after the extraction.
  • Relax for at least a day after an extraction.
  • Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully for 24 hrs. after extraction.
  • After 24 hrs. rinse your mouth with a homemade solution of ½ tablespoon salt and 8 ounces of warm water.
  • Eat soft like cold soup, cold stew, cold rice pudding, cold food stuffs to avoid injury to soft tissue and socket. After 4 or 5 days add solid food to your diet.
  • Do not drink from straw.
  • Regularly wash, brush, floss your teeth and use betadine mouth wash regularly after every meal to avoid infection.
  • Do not smoke for at least 1 week.
  • Do not drink alcohol for at least 1 week.
